­­­David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to announce a pop-up exhibition in Seoul, the gallery’s first initiative in the city, on view from August 18 through September 5, 2022 at 157, Itaewon-ro 55-gil, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Coinciding with the gallery’s solo presentation of new paintings by Calvin Marcus at Frieze Seoul (on view September 2–5, 2022), the pop-up will introduce Korean and Asian audiences to the breadth of the gallery’s program and presents work by a multigenerational range of artists that highlight the gallery’s roots in Los Angeles as well as the international reach it has developed over the last two decades. Featured artists include John Armleder, Huma Bhabha, Matthew Brannon, Aaron Curry, Fred Eversley, Derek Fordjour, Guan Xiao, Jennifer Guidi, Jason Fox, Evan Holloway, Shara Hughes, Hilary Pecis, and Adam Pendleton.

Among the exhibition’s highlights are a recent work by the Pakistani-born, New York-based artist Huma Bhabha, whose figurative objects evoke ancient and futuristic totems alike; parabolic lens sculptures by Fred Eversley, a key member of the Southern California Light and Space movement since the 1960s; and recent objects by Beijing-based artist Guan Xiao, who joined the gallery earlier this year and whose first Los Angeles solo exhibition will take place in 2023. Los Angeles-based artist Evan Holloway, who contributed to the city’s renaissance as a center of contemporary art in the late 1990s and early 2000s, will present a major new bronze tree branch sculpture, the typology for which he is best known. The paintings on view highlight a variety of approaches to the medium. In a recent abstraction by New York-based artist Adam Pendleton, for instance, marks from the studio are photographed and screen-printed in richly textured fields, while the "Pour” paintings by pioneering Swiss conceptualist John Armleder exemplify his use of chance and humor. A new painting by Shara Hughes continues the artist’s visionary approach to the landscape genre, creating a dreamy composition that features snake-like trees against a moody blue environment. A sand mandala painting by Los Angeles-based Jennifer Guidi (whose first solo exhibition in China is on view now at the Long Museum West Bund, Shanghai) embodies the liminal realm where perception, imagination, and intuition meet. Hilary Pecis’s observational landscape painting depicts a sun-drenched Southern California yard sourced from the artist’s everyday life in Los Angeles.

Established in 2003 as part of a burgeoning artistic community in Los Angeles’s Chinatown neighborhood, David Kordansky Gallery began as a cutting-edge incubator for emerging talent. It quickly grew into a widely respected voice in the international conversation surrounding new and recent art, and moved to its second home, in Culver City, in 2008.

David Kordansky Gallery now represents more than fifty artists, who are among the most influential artists working today, and operates a 20,000-square-foot facility in Los Angeles and a 5,000-square-foot space in New York, both designed in collaboration with Kulapat Yantrasast and his architecture firm, WHY. In September 2020, the gallery opened an expanded Los Angeles campus, its third home in the city, which encompasses three exhibition spaces across two buildings with a landscaped courtyard between them, allowing for three separate shows to be mounted simultaneously and for diversity in cultural programming, including artist talks, performance, film, and outdoor sculpture. Its gallery space in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York opened with an acclaimed solo exhibition by Lauren Halsey in May 2022.

The gallery’s artists, who work across a wide range of media and genres, have been the subjects of solo exhibitions at renowned museums worldwide and regularly appear in landmark biennials and thematic group shows. David Kordansky Gallery’s exhibition program is dedicated to presenting artists’ work with passion and intellectual rigor, and to bringing the utmost care and precision to the showcasing of their visions. 데이비드 코단스키 갤러리는 2022년 8월 18일부터 9월 5일까지 용산구 이태원로55길 157에서 서울 최초 팝업 전시를 개최한다. 9월 2일부터 5일까지 프리즈 서울에서 열리는 캘빈 마커스 (Calvin Marcus) 솔로 부스와 함께 야심 차게 선보이는 이 전시는 지난 20년간 로스앤젤레스에 뿌리를 두고 국제적으로 행동반경을 넓혀 온 갤러리의 역사와 다양한 세대의 소속 작가들을 한국과 아시아 관객들에게 소개하는 기회가 될 예정이다. 이 전시에는 존 암레더 (John Armleder), 후마 바바 (Huma Bhabha), 매튜 브래넌 (Matthew Brannon), 애론 커리 (Aaron Curry), 프레드 에버슬리 (Fred Eversley), 데렉 포쥬어 (Derek Fordjour), 관 샤오 (Guan Xiao), 제니퍼 귀디 (Jennifer Guidi), 제이슨 팍스 (Jason Fox), 에반 할로웨이 (Evan Holloway), 샤라 휴즈 (Shara Hughes), 힐러리 페치스 (Hilary Pecis), 애덤 팬들턴 (Adam Pendleton) 등의 작가가 참여한다.

전시의 하이라이트 중 하나인 파키스탄 출생, 뉴욕 기반 작가 휴마 바바의 구상-오브제는 고대와 미래를 동시에 연상시키는 토템으로서 멀리 떨어진 두 시공간을 엮는다. 1960년대 캘리포니아 남부에서 시작된 미술 경향인 ‘빛과 공간 예술 (Light and Space movement)’에서 중추적인 역할을 해온 프레드 에버슬리의 대표적인 파라볼릭 렌즈 (parabolic lens) 작품과 올해 초 갤러리와 전속계약을 맺고 2023년 로스앤젤레스에서 개인전을 앞둔 베이징 작가 관 샤오의 최근 조각 작품도 만나 볼 수 있으며, 1990년대 후반부터 2000년대 초반까지 로스앤젤레스의 현대 미술 르네상스를 이끈 에반 할로웨이의 대표적인 청동 나뭇가지 시리즈의 최근 작품 또한 눈 여겨 볼만하다. 전시 내 회화 작품들은 매체에 대한 다양한 접근법을 보여주는데 예를 들어 뉴욕 기반 작가 애덤 팬들턴의 최근 작품은 작가가 작업실에서 찾은 붓 자국 등을 촬영하여 다양한 질감의 표면에 인쇄하여 만들어졌고 스위스 개념주의 미술의 선구자 존 암레더는 물감과 글리터를 캔버스에 부으며 운과 위트를 회화에 접목한다. 마치 뱀과 같이 보이는 나무들로 무성히 뒤덮인 푸르고 몽환적인 풍경을 담은 샤라 휴즈의 새로운 회화에선 기존 풍경화 장르에 신선함을 가져오는 그녀만의 독특한 접근법을 볼 수 있다. 지난여름 상하이 롱 미술관 웨스트번드에서 개인전을 연 제니퍼 귀디의 모래 만다라 회화는 지각과 상상, 직관 사이 형용할 수 없는 경계를 다룬다. 관찰에 기초한 힐러리 페치스의 풍경화는 캘리포니아 남부 특유의 쨍쨍한 햇살이 담긴 작가의 일상 속 로스앤젤레스 풍경을 담는다.

2003년 로스앤젤레스 차이나타운에서 첫 문을 연 데이비드 코단스키 갤러리는 독창적인 젊은 작가들을 발굴하고 소개하는 인큐베이터로 시작하였다. 곧 국제 동시대 미술계에서 주목받게 된 갤러리는 2008년에 컬버시티로 이관하며 빠르게 성장하였다. 현재 갤러리는 50명이 넘는 전 세계적으로 영향력 있는 전속작가들을 두고 있으며 세계적인 건축가 쿨라파트 얀트라사스트 (Kulapat Yantrasast)와 그의 팀 WHY가 설계한 로스앤젤레스와 뉴욕 공간을 운영하고 있다. 지난 2014년에 첫 문을 열고 2020년 9월 확장 공사를 완료한 현재의 로스앤젤레스 공간은 20,000 평방피트에 걸쳐2개의 빌딩 속 3개의 전시 공간과 빌딩 사이 야외 공간으로 구성되어 있어 아티스트 토크, 퍼포먼스, 상영회, 야외 조각 전시 등 다양한 프로그램을 진행할 수 있다. 올해 첼시 근교에 문을 연 5,000 평방피트 규모의 뉴욕 갤러리는 지난 5월 로렌 할시 (Lauren Halsey)의 개인전을 성황리에 개최하며 문을 열었다.

다양한 매체와 장르를 넘나드는 갤러리 전속 작가들은 국제적인 기관, 미술관 및 비엔날레에서 개인전 및 단체전을 가져왔다. 데이비드 코단스키 갤러리는 이러한 작가들의 재능과 비전을 온전하고 진중하게 담을 수 있는 전시 프로그램을 위해 부단하게 노력하고 있다. 이러한 노력의 일환으로 전시, 아트페어, 연계 프로그램에 더해 작가 도록 및 한정판 아티스트 북 등 다양한 출판사업도 겸하고 있다.
