“金牛座与唤醒者”取自于占星术语汇,指涉了天王星在近期进入金牛座的星象运行变化。文化历史学者理查德·塔纳斯(Richard Tarnas)在其1995年的著作《觉醒者普罗米修斯》(Prometheus the Awakener)中,描述了占星家是如何把天王星与“改变、反叛、自由、解放、变革、革命和出乎意料的结构崩溃;以及激动人心、突如其来的惊喜、光彩夺目的洞察力、启示和觉醒”联系在一起。他指出这颗行星被错误命名,并把其原始的形态特征与普罗米修斯联系起来——后者从神界盗走火种送给人类,体现了平等主义原则下的技术共享。
2018年5月,天王星进入金牛座,它将一直在此停留——除了在今年晚些时候和明年年初短暂逆回白羊座——直到2025年。金牛座象征着感官、质朴、理智和多产,这似乎刚好抵消了天王星本身所代表的刺激性,以及对革命义无反顾的热情。然而,当这两者结合在一起,便魔法般地召唤出极端的自然结构幻象,以及一种兼收并蓄、寻根究底的阴柔气质,把我们指向一种独特的感官觉知表现形式。在这种精神气质的感召下,“金牛座与唤醒者”将一系列雕塑作品并置呈现,它们缜密的智性思考与实验气质与其视觉表达效果密不可分。展览中作品所使用的材料包含了上釉陶器、轮胎、香烟盒、香、染色天鹅绒、铜和破碎的镜面,它们交替呈现出壮观的、短暂的、立体的、或是挑衅般平坦的质感;一些作品被纷呈夺目的色彩所点燃——或自燃;另一些作品则依赖于微妙的、忧郁的色调变化,以强化材料本身的质感。展览以非语言的方式明确阐释出丰富的观念,充溢着错综复杂的图符和深奥难懂的几何图案。
此外,不同作品之间所构成的对话,进一步把我们推向了对更为广泛的形式问题的思考。比如,查卡娅·布克的雕塑作品使用了切割的轮胎材料,呈现出强烈的、纪念碑式的外观,对大量社会和环境现实中的普遍问题作出隐喻——劳动力、种族、阶级和城市开发——这与保罗·帕斯考·特里奥特的组装结构形成互文,后者将一组香烟包装和其他的现成材料放置在架子或基座上。两位艺术家通过把废弃的物件置于抽象的秩序感中,赋予了材料崭新的生命。
波利·阿普菲尔鲍姆的作品把大量的染色织物在地板上延展开来,从而重新定义了雕塑作品的分类规则。这些织物原本是水平呈现的绘画,但它们却以自身独特的材料性进入到雕塑的范畴中。而这种对分类形式的拆解也在整个展览中反复出现。在贝蒂·伍德曼的“阿兹特克陶瓶和地毯”系列中,一个有巨大侧翼的陶瓶被放置在覆盖着平滑的陶瓷碎片的画布上;艺术家对整件作品上釉或涂以鲜艳的颜色及图案,从而以精湛技艺赋予了它立体派式的空间幻象和视觉韵律。鲁比·内利在展览中同样采用了陶瓷容器的形式,创造出醒目的“求爱艺术”(Venusian)式的女性形体,这件陶罐的两侧上釉,以起伏摆动的浮雕画形式表现出酒神狂欢状态的女性形象。
人类——或类人——形态在胡玛·芭芭的作品中同样扮演了重要角色。她的混杂形态结合了诸多形状,其中一些很容易辨认出是人类或生物,另一些则包含了任意切割的、硬边的组成单元;其情感表现力使之自然地融为一体。明迪·夏皮罗的图腾雕塑显现出致幻的彩虹色漩涡,使之即使完全脱离了具象表现却依旧保留了人性的温暖。在其他的新作品中,两个大小相同、紧密相扣的圆形,被裹以螺旋的发泡彩胶和反光碎片,它们看上去像是行星环,或是稀奇古怪的神灵吐出的烟圈。
事实上,伊万·哈罗威的香插结构所产生的烟雾确实弥漫着整个展厅空间。其圆柱形的形态——由钢、石膏、陶土和其他材料制成——也因使用了失效电池来在表面上制造出独特的环状开口,而流露出一种忧郁的、略带恶意的气息。哈罗威创造出一个慈爱甚至充满希望的理想世界,使之对抗着由工业生产所导致的丧失了浪漫感的地球生命存在。自然与人造物之间的关系成为了艾琳·沙谢特的作品的核心,特别是那件由涂漆的木制底座所支撑的陶瓷形态,它们看上去像是由自然之力所塑造而成。
此次展览在很大程度上体现了艺术对自然的追随,艺术被自然固有的构成形式所牵引,同时对自然的平衡状态作出回应。芭芭拉·蔡斯-里布的雕塑由丝带般的长铜片和丝线构成,诗意地展现出二元性的存在。坚硬与柔软、刻板与灵活、结构和装饰,这些极端对立的状态相互连结,不但暗示出最强有力的革新也可能成为极端的融合,也提示了我们所身处的物质世界正在不断发展出自我统一和平衡的新方法。既然人类无可避免地趋向于暴力的二元对立意识形态,那么在接下来天王星进入金牛座的七年中,我们或许即将感受到由这种矛盾所引发的剧烈震颤,以及随之而来真正的和谐——倘若它真的存并且可能到来的话。
